In the past few months the Ultimate Fighting Challenge (UFC) has hit publicity records for all the wrong reasons. It is well-known that these athletes take some of the greatest physical punishment of any profession. The abuse to their bodies is tremendous. No doubt steroids are rampant. Another problem might very well be alcohol abuse.

UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

The incident occurred at around 5 a.m. in Binghamton, N.Y. where Jones totaled his car when he crashed into a pole. He was arrested on the scene. Fortunately he didn’t have to spend too much time in jail as he was bailed out by his mommy.

Jones is coming off of a win over Rashad Evans at UFC 145 in April, and is slated to next defend his belt against Dan Henderson at UFC 151 on Sept. 1 in Las Vegas.

Let’s hope he takes a DUI class and gets some counseling so that alcohol does not derail his great career. He is the third UFC fighter in the last six months to receive a DUI. Perhaps President Dana White should implement mandatory alcohol classes for all fighters.
